5 Things to Look for in a Contract Manufacturer
Five criteria that separate reliable manufacturing partners from costly mistakes.
Choosing a contract manufacturer is one of the most consequential decisions a product brand makes. The right partner accelerates your growth; the wrong one can destroy product quality, erode customer trust, and waste months of lead time.
Here are five criteria to evaluate before committing.
1. Certifications - Verifiable, Not Claimed
Look for GMP certification for cosmetics, ISO 22000 for food products, and Halal certification if your target markets require it. Critically: verify these certificates are current. Ask for the certificate document itself, not just a claim on their website. Certificates list the issuing body, scope, and expiry date.
2. Sample Process Discipline
A serious manufacturer will not proceed to production without your written approval of a sample. Red flag: a manufacturer who pushes back on providing samples, or who proceeds to production after verbal approval only. The sample and approval process is your only real protection against receiving goods that don't match expectation.
3. Minimum Order Quantities That Fit Your Stage
If you're launching a new product, you don't need - and shouldn't commit to - tens of thousands of units. Look for a manufacturer with MOQs in the 500-2,000 unit range who is genuinely comfortable with that scale. Some larger manufacturers technically accept small orders but treat them as low priority; structure and culture matter.
4. Transparent Communication
During your initial conversations, note whether the manufacturer answers your questions directly, acknowledges limitations honestly, and responds within reasonable timeframes. If they're evasive before you're a client, they'll be worse once you've paid.
5. Regulatory Competence for Your Target Markets
If you're selling into the EU, the UK, the US, or the Gulf, your manufacturer needs to understand the regulatory requirements of those markets - not just their own domestic rules. Ask specifically: "What experience do you have with EU Cosmetics Regulation compliance?" or "What does your FDA registration cover?" Vague answers are a signal.
